New Australian Formula Ford Championship team Evans Motorsport Group has signed former Andre Borell for its assault on the 2010 title.
Borell, who competed in last year’s Formula Ford title as a private entry, is the first driver confirmed in Evans’ three-car Mygale team.
“I’m looking forward to working with Evans Motorsport Group and its engineers as I’m sure we can kick off the 2010 season with a car that’s competitive enough to win the Australian Formula Ford Championship,” Borell said.
After winning a number of karting titles in his home state of Queensland, along with finishing runner up in the Australian Karting Championships in 2003, the 22-year-old progressed his career to open wheelers. In 2007 he started his Formula Ford career in the Queensland Championship in a self-run car, and continued this campaign in selected rounds throughout 2008. He began his national level career in 2009, competing in seven championship rounds.
Next season will mark his first full season in the national championship and Borell is excited to be making the step up.
“I’ve been looking to take the next step for some time now – I think the days where you can win as a privateer might be over,” he admitted.
Team principal Joshua Evans said that Borell is “under-rated” as a driver and will fit into his team well.
“Everybody at Evans Motorsport Group is absolutely delighted to be able to welcome Andre to our team,” he said.
“We have kept an eye on Andre’s results since winning his two Queensland Karting championships. We believe he is certainly one of the most under-rated drivers in the country and we will be looking to show his full potential in the season ahead.”
Evans Motorsport Group was a new entry in Formula Ford in 2009 and contested two Mygale SJ08a chassis at the Sandown and Phillip Island rounds of the 2009 Australian Formula Ford Championship – finishing fourth at Sandown and achieving two third place finishes at Phillip Island.
An announcement regarding the team’s other drivers will be made in the weeks following driver evaluation tests.
