Ford has announced that the Mustang will return to the top level of Australian motorsport next season.
The Blue Oval has today confirmed that DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing will campaign racegoing versions of the coupe in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in 2019.
The Mustang will be powered by a V8 engine.
“Our focus is on Mustang but we have a very competitive drivetrain with the V8 so that’s what our focus is,” said DJRTP’s Ryan Story.
Ford teams have run the FGX Falcon since 2015, even though the road car went out of production when Ford closed local manufacturing in October 2016.
The move has been allowed by the adoption of Supercars’ Gen 2 regulations, which this year saw Holden usher in the five-door hatchback ZB Commodore in a departure from the traditional sedan shape.
It has been more than three decades since a Mustang raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
Ford also announced that the Ranger Raptor will be Supercars’ official recovery vehicle.
