Moto2 rider Remy Gardner has broken both legs and an ankle in a motocross training crash.

Gardner will undergo surgery in Barcelona at the hands of Dr Xavier Mir, a regular surgeon for grand prix motorcycle riders.

The 20-year-old will certainly miss this weekend’s fourth round in Jerez, where he will be replaced at Tech3 by Spanaird Hector Garzo, and probably multiple races during his recovery period.

“It’s very disappointing news that we received today from Wayne Gardner informing us that Remy apparently broke his two legs and one ankle, which means of course he won’t be in Jerez,” said Team Principal Herve Poncharal.

“Right now, I think he will be transferred to the Dexeus Clinica of Dr Mir and we have to wait and see.

“It looks like he could be out for a few weeks, so clearly he won’t be able to race this weekend, which is a big shame, because Remy was having the best start of his young career in Moto2 with a good race in Qatar, a really, really strong race in Argentina.

“Texas was a bit less competitive, but still holding a good position in the championship.

“Unfortunately, it is what it is and he isn’t the first one with an accident in training.

“Every year, race by race, MotoGP Championship riders are getting injured while training. It’s a shame, but this is life.”

Gardner had finished 12th, sixth, and 17th in the first three races of the season and is positioned 12th in the championship.

The Spanish MotoGP starts on Friday.
