GRM acquires third Renault in TCR expansion

A third Renault Megane is on its way to Australia

Garry Rogers Motorsport has ordered a third Renault Megane as it continues to expand its involvement in the TCR platform.

The Melbourne Supercars squad currently runs two Megane machines, developed by Swiss outfit Vukovic Motorsport, in TCR Australia for James Moffat and Chris Pither.

Despite limited development, the Megane has already enjoyed success in TCR Australia having scored three podiums and a pole position.

News of the latest order arrives amid a growing relationship between the team and Renault Australia, which sponsored Moffat’s entry at Queensland Raceway last weekend.

The French brand has provided assistance to the outfit by supplying parts and support vehicles.

Confirmation of a third car also comes after the squad revealed it has acquired three more Alfa Romeo Giuliettas to join a pair it purchased prior to the start of the TCR Australia season.

The latest Megane acquisition could arrive in Australia in time for TCR Australia Round 6 at Sandown from September 20-22.

“We have ordered another one, we have got a third one coming,” GRM team director Barry Rogers told Speedcafe.com.

“We should have it, maybe for Sandown, but certainly for the last round at The Bend(in November).

“Whether we will run it or not, we are not sure, but we have ordered (the car) and it is three weeks away from being finished.”

Meanwhile, GRM is hopeful its sponsorship arrangement with Renault Australia will continue for the remainder of the TCR Australia season, with talks underway between the team and the manufacturer.

Renault’s activation at TCR Australia Round 4 at Queensland Raceway

Renault showcased its support of TCR Australia with a manufacturer activation at Queensland Raceway.

“It is (pleasing to see Renault’s support), they are a motor company steeped in motorsport history, and they were watching (TCR Australia) from a distance early on and after the first two or three rounds they contacted us and have been assisting us with parts and cars and vans which has been great,” Rogers added.

“They want to get more involved with it, they see it as way of assisting the dealers by showcasing the cars.

“We are talking about extending it (the sponsorship deal) with them.

“It is something that back at head office they are working through.

“They are looking more to next year but they thought to get on it this year to see how it all goes.

“The talks are ongoing for an extension to the end of this year.”

GRM endured a challenging round with its Meganes last weekend with Pither forced out of Race 1 and 3 with engine issues, while Moffat slipped from second to fifth in the standings.
