Australian Formula 3 racer Jordan Oon got his season back on track with two podium finishes at the latest round of the European F3 Open at the Hungaroring, near Budapest.

After two disappointing rounds before the mid-season break, Oon returned to the track with the help of a new race engineer (Duncan Williams) and a new driver coach (Andy Pardoe). And the fresh additions to the team helped, Oon looking quick throughout the free practice sessions, culminating in the fastest time in the Copa class in the Friday’s final session.

In qualifying for Race 1, the Team West-Tec driver was right on the money. He ended the session third fastest in class, although he did crash in the closing minutes while making a brave play for pole position.

After making a great start to the first race, Oon found himself in the Copa lead, before dropping to second on the third lap, a position he was able to hold until the end. It was his best finish since debuting in the series earlier this year.

On Sunday, Oon qualified fifth in class, albeit just 0.2sec behind the pole-sitter. Like Saturday, Oon made a terrific start, vaulting himself into the Copa lead on the run to the first turn. But he was unlucky with traffic later in the first lap, and ended the race in third position.

The two podium finishes puts Oon right back in contention for a top three championship position. He still sits fourth, however is now just four points off third, and 12 points off second with four races remaining.

“I am very happy with the return to form we’ve had at this race meeting,” Oon said.

“I’ve worked hard over the mid-season break and surrounded myself with people equally determined to succeed as I am, which has been a major factor in my climbing back into a position to fight for podiums.

“At this rate, I’m confident that we will be challenging for race wins in Monza.”
