Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula Renault 3.5 Series team-mate Brendon Hartley has been axed from the Red Bull Junior Team.
The New Zealander, who was jointly positioned as this year’s test and reserve driver for the Red Bull Racing team, will make way for Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne to move up into Formula Renault 3.5 Series alongside Australian Ricciardo for Tech 1 Racing.
A brief statement on the Red Bull Junior Team’s website declared that Hartley has been released from his Red Bull duties.
“The Red Bull Junior Team announced today that Jean-Eric Vergne will move up into the Formula Renault 3.5 Series to contest the remainder of the championship alongside Daniel Ricciardo for Tech 1 Racing,” the statement said.
“The move comes following Red Bull Junior Team’s decision to release Brendon Hartley, after four seasons with the programme.”
Vergne has been competing in the British Formula 3 International Championship, driving with Red Bull support for Carlin this year. He will continue to compete in both championships for the remainder of the season.
Ricciardo is currently placed second in the World Series by Renault, with two wins in 12 races, including a great win on the Monaco streets. On the flipside, Hartley has been consistent, if unimpressive. He currently sits sixth with no race wins.
