David Russell lit up the timing screens as he clocked the quickest ever Porsche Carrera Cup lap around the Surfers Paradise street circuit in practice.
The 32-year-old, deputising for full timer Roger Lago in the JBS car for this weekend’s final round, dipped under the existing lap record with a 1.12.8624s effort set in the dying minutes of the second session.
This is only Russell’s third outing in the car this season having previously competed at Phillip Island and Mount Panorama two weeks ago.
“The car is pretty good around here,” said Russell.
“We made a slight change for the second session, the car was a lot better and the guys were excellent.
“Clearly you have to push hard through he chicanes to make the times.
“Its great to be P1 for both Roger Lago and JBS, he has been great to hand over the keys again.”
Warren Luff was the quickest of the trio vying for the Porsche Carrera Cup title in second just 0.1600s adrift of Russell.
Fellow title contender Steven Richards was third fastest, while reigning champion Craig Baird was sixth overall behind Bathurst winner Shae Davies and Nick Foster.
Elsewhere, Tony Bates topped the Elite Class.
