McLaughlin scores first V8 Supercars pole

Scott McLaughlin scored pole for Race 9

Scott McLaughlin has recorded a maiden V8 Supercars Championship pole position for both himself and Volvo ahead of Race 9 at Winton.

Five-times a qualifying runner-up prior to today, the 20-year-old proved the pace-setter on both green tyre runs.

McLaughlin opened his account with a 1:21.57s on his first set before improving further to 1:21.51s on his second.

The times were set on the first lap of each run in today’s warmer conditions.

Shane van Gisbergen and Fabian Coulthard joined McLaughlin in making it a Kiwi one-two-three for the second consecutive occasion.

Van Gisbergen’s final lap proved just 0.06s shy of McLaughlin’s, while Coulthard was 0.01s further adrift in third.

Mark Winterbottom, Craig Lowndes and James Courtney completed the top six, with Rick Kelly the first of the Nissans in seventh.

It was a tough session for Saturday heroes Erebus as Will Davison and Lee Holdsworth managed just 20th and 22nd respectively.

Jamie Whincup’s difficult weekend meanwhile continued, with the #1 Red Bull Holden set to start 13th.

McLaughlin’s pole follows a nightmare day for the Volvo team on Saturday.

A flicked water pump belt caused an engine failure in Race 7, while McLaughlin was later forced to pit from the lead in Race 8 due to an electrical problem.

The 200km Race 9 will kick-off at 1530 local time.

See below for the full Qualifying result for Race 9
