The 2016 Supercars season dished up only the fourth different title winner in the last nine stagings of the Championship when Shane Van Gisbergen sealed the deal in the penultimate race in Sydney.

The moment the Red Bull pilot sealed his maiden Championship was clearly a highlight in a season punctuated by incidents.

Beating his new team-mate and six-times champion Jamie Whincup was a career defining moment for the Kiwi who was brought into the series 10 years ago as a raw-boned teenager.

Of the others, there was the emotional maiden team win for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport when Nick Percat won in Adelaide to kick the year off.

Perhaps the most controversial incident was Jamie Whincup’s incident in the closing laps of Bathurst which ultimately resulted in Garth Tander and Scott McLaughlin being taken out of the race.

The incident led to Whincup being handed a 15s which was later appealed by Triple Eight leaving the result of the race in a state of flux until it was decided that the team did not have grounds to appeal in the first place.

Subsequently Will Davison and Jono Webb were cleared of victory which saw the later become the first driver to win the Bathurst 12 Hour and Bathurst 1000 in the same year.

Or was it Whincup’s 100th race victory coming at Sydney Motorsport Park, seeing him join team-mate Craig Lowndes as the only centurions in the Supercars paddock.
