Prost penalty gifts Servia Formula E pole

Oriol Servia will start the second FIA Formula E Championship race from pole

A penalty for Nicolas Prost has promoted Oriol Servia to pole position for the second round of the all electric FIA Formula E Championship at Malaysia’s Putrajaya street circuit.

Prost posted a session best of 1.21.779s but a 10 place grid drop for his involvement in the final lap clash with Nick Heidfeld at the inaugural round at Beijing, has seen Dragon Racing’s Servia elevated to pole.

As a result of the penalty, Prost will start this afternoon’s race from 11th on the grid.

Servia’s Dragon Racing team-mate Jerome D’Amboriso will start alongside the Spaniard on the front row having posted a time just two hundredths slower than the former IndyCar star.

Matthew Brabham produced a solid performance in his first Formula E qualifying session which will see him start from 10th spot for Andretti Autosport.

Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird heads row two alongside Abt Racing’s Daniel Abt, who topped the times in the first of four qualifying groups.

Former F1 drivers Jarno Trulli and Karun Chandhok will share the third row in fifth and sixth for Trulli GP and Mahindra Racing respectively.

China Racing’s Nelson Piquet Jr trailed Chandhok by just a hundredth of a second in seventh, while Venturi’s Nick Heidfeld was eighth just ahead of Bruno Senna.

A mistake from Jaime Alguersuari ended his qualifying hopes as contact with the wall ripped the right front from his Virgin car.

The Spaniard suffered the crash while trying to navigate his way around a slow moving Lucas di Grassi. Alguersuari and the Beijing race winner will prop up the final row of the grid.

The second Formula E race of the season is due to begin at 2pm (local time).
