Red Bull is set to deploy a ‘revamped’ chassis at the Spanish Grand Prix as it bids to close the gap to Ferrari and Mercedes.

The Milton Keynes squad has struggled to match its rivals following the introduction of sweeping regulation changes this season.

The team was hotly tipped to take the fight to Mercedes and Ferrari this year with the new rules placing a greater focus on aerodynamics.

However, Red Bull has uncharacteristically struggled to create downforce with its RB13, while also hampered by a lack of power from its Renault power unit.

Max Verstappen has scored the only podium from the first three races.

Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo showed encouraging pace in Bahrain last weekend by matching the lead group in the early stages.

The team’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has now revealed a ‘massive’ chassis updated is expected when the European season begins in Spain next month (May 12-14).

The development will arrived ahead of a engine upgrade planned for the Canadian Grand Prix.

“We have two problems: Renault had some reliability issues, which have slowed them down in the development; and we didn’t deliver the chassis that we should have done,” Marko told the official F1 website.

“But we are working day and night to pick up our shortcomings.

“We are pretty optimistic that we will make a significant step forward in Barcelona where a big change of parts is coming.

“The chassis will be ‘revamped’ in Barcelona and Renault is planning something for Montreal.”

Prior to the arrival of the update, Red Bull will head to Russia for the fourth round of the championship from April 28-30.
