Formula One driver Sergio Perez used social media to announce his departure from McLaren after one season with the historic grand prix squad.
Perez has saved McLaren from making his exit public, however the Woking outfit has not been moved to say when they will name his replacement for 2014.
Kevin Magnussen remains firmly in the box seat to be promoted into the vacant role beside Jenson Button who has comprehensively outgunned his Mexican team-mate this season.
Perez’s dumping is deemed to have been harsh in some quarters of the sport during a season where McLaren has endured a diabolically uncompetitive year.
All the same Perez was gracious in communicating on Twitter of his release from the squad after joining this season following two seasons with Sauber.
“First of all, I would like to thank McLaren for giving me the opportunity to be with them this season,” said Perez.
“It has been an honour for me to have been in one of the most competitive teams in the sport and I do not regret even a bit having joined them.
“I have always given the best of me for the team and still despite this I could not achieve what I aimed for in this historic team.”
Perez also acknowledged how grateful he was for the support from his global network of fans.
“They have never let me down, especially in difficult moments like these.
“I truly appreciate their support, they have never forgotten me.
“I have met a lot of new people at McLaren and I have made many good friends as well. I am eternally grateful to them.”
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has been quoted as saying that Button is the only driver the team has signed for 2014.
Whitmarsh has not given any indication of when it will confirm a second driver.
