French flyer Simon Pagenaud has claimed his sixth pole of the season ahead of the Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio sports car course.
Delivering a late knockout blow, Pagenaud produced a mega lap to unseat his rivals in the Fast 6 run-off.
Pagenaud’s 1.03.88s effort was enough to knock his Team Penske team-mate Will Power off the #1 spot with the Australian to start second after posting a 1.03.93s lap.
With Pagenaud and Power first and second in the points, the scene is set for an explosive showdown at the 13-turn circuit with neither driver yet to record an IndyCar Series victory at the venue.
Ed Carpenter Racing driver Josef Newgarden will start from third after his 1.04.12s effort ahead of the best of the Honda-powered drivers, Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport).
The sole Chip Ganassi Racing runner to advance to the final shootout, Charlie KImball will start from fifth ahead of Graham Rahal.
In Round 2, both Power and Pagenaud unleashed late laps to go 1-2 for the session with the Australian’s 1:04.07s lap lowering the track record again.
Of the key runners missing a spot in the Fast 6 where five-times Mid-Ohio winner Scott Dixon (Ganassi) who was shuffled down to 11th while Penske runners Helio Castroneves and Juan Montoya were seventh and eighth.
