Sonic Motor Racing Services will return to Porsche’s Carrera Cup Australia next season with as many as three cars.
The Michael Ritter-run team won the Carrera Cup in 2007 with David Reynolds.
Sonic switched its attention to V8 Supercars’ Dunlop Series when the one-make class began a two-year hiatus at the end of the following season.
Having returned to Australian race tracks in 2011, next season will prove another milestone year for the category as a new model, the Type 991, is introduced.
“The timing is right for us with the new car coming online,” Ritter told Speedcafe.com.
“We’d never have moved away from the category had it not ceased at the end of 2008.
“The plan is to run three cars, with one or two of those hopefully in a position to challenge for the championship.
“We’re really excited about it because it’s been a tough couple of years in the Dunlop Series.”
The team hopes to have its drivers locked in ahead of Porsche’s new car handover days at Sydney Motorsport Park in mid-January.
Ritter elected not to comment on Sonic’s future involvement in the Dunlop Series, with the team yet to make a firm decision on whether it will continue in the class.
Sonic ran Formula Ford graduate Gary Jacobson and businessman Rodney Jane in a pair of ex-Triple Eight Falcon FGs this season, finishing 17th and 19th in the points standings respectively.
Jane drove for Sonic in the Carrera Cup between 2005 and 2009 and is expected to return to the championship with the team.
Ritter’s operation is however guaranteed to be seen in the reborn Australian Formula Ford Series, which will run largely on the Shannons Nationals bill.
“We’re going ahead as per other season with three or possibly four cars,” he said.
“To be honest the way that it’s panned out only bodes for a stronger series going forward.”
Sonic won this year’s final national Formula Ford season to be run with CAMS Championship status through driver Anton De Pasquale.
The Victorian teenager joins Sonic’s honour role of AFFC winners that includes Will Davison (2001), Jamie Whincup (2002), David Reynolds (2004), Tim Blanchard (2007) Nick Percat (2009) and Cameron Waters (2011).
