Supercars desire burning bright for Alex Davison

Alex Davison still has the hunger for top-level Supercars competition as he prepares to make his comeback at the Coates Hire Ipswich Super Sprint this weekend.

The former Supercars full-timer has secured a deal to drive the #3 Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport at Queensland Raceway which marks his first drive in the series since 2015.

Aaren Russell took over the LDM entry from Cameron McConville at Townsville as part of a deal which will see him drive the #3 Holden at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 (October 5-8) and the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 (November 24-26).

Davison’s last start in a Supercars was the Sydney 500 in 2015 when he was recalled by Erebus Motorsport, following a stint as co-driver to younger brother Will Davison in the Pirtek Enduro Cup.

Having been on the Supercars sidelines last year, Davison jumped at the LDM opportunity which he hopes will develop into a co-driver role for the enduro season.

The current Porsche Carrera Cup Australia title contender says he has plenty more Supercar racing miles left in his career.

“I just like driving racing cars. I have a disease and if I get asked to drive it is not possible for me to say no,” Davison told Speedcafe.com.

“I’m looking forward to getting out there.

“We are not like AFL players where your body is destroyed by the time you reach your 30s.

“My mind is still good and I’m driving as well as I have ever driven.

“I have not been doing as much racing as you do in Supercars as I’m doing eight rounds of Carrera Cup, so it is hard to be at your peak.

“My body hasn’t been smashed with training eight times a day so I don’t see why I can’t keep racing on.

“I feel good and I’m still hungry and If I have the opportunity to get back into Supercars I would sure grab it with both hands.

“Who knows what this weekend is going to bring and what it will lead to?

“It goes without saying that the goal and the reason I’m here is more looking towards doing the enduros and that is what we are all thinking.

“None of that is locked in but that is the reason I’m doing it. There is a reasonable chance that will happen we have just got to see how that plans.”

Having been away from competitive Supercars action since December 2015, Davison is keeping a lid on his expectations for this weekend.

“My expectations are well in check. I know the situation of rolling in at the last minute in such a competitive field,” he added.

“I know how tough it is to do well. I have been in this field and been unsuccessful and successful, so I have been right through the spectrum.

“There is no pressure I am just going to drive as well as aI can and treat it like any other race weekend, have some fun and see where we end up.

“I expect to be closer to the back than the front and that is just being realistic.

“If I can get my eye in and work as we normally do, stay out of trouble then that will be a successful weekend.”

Davison will jump behind the wheel of the #3 LDM Commodore for the first time in Friday’s opening practice at 1255 AEST.
