Will Power has passed a mandatory concussion test that clears him to chase a second title at Sonoma from September 16-18.
Power was forced to undertake the strict medical tests after he clobbered the fence hard after being hit from behind by Charlie Kimball 21 laps from the finish of the Watkins Glen race last weekend.
The Australian 2014 IndyCar champion is now set to resume challenging points leader and fellow Team Penske driver Simon Pagenaud for the title at the Californian decider.
Under the supervision of Dr Stephen Olvey, Power was assessed at the University of Miami’s concussion centre where he was cleared by IndyCar medical director Dr Geoffrey Billows.
Power successfully passed the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImpACT) and Vestibular/Ocular-Motor Screening (VOMS) examinations.
“He flew down to the University of Miami Concussion Centre early this morning and we conducted two sophisticated tests to determine if he’d suffered a concussion over the weekend, and he passed both of them with no issue whatsoever,” Dr Olvey said.
Power goes into the double points Sonoma round 43 points behind Pagenaud with a maximum of 104 points on offer as the series comes down to a two-driver shootout.
The Toowoomba driver was forced to sit out the opening race at St Petersburg after claiming pole in March when he suffered concussion-like symptoms following a practice crash earlier in the weekend.
