Will Power moved to fifth on IndyCar’s all-time pole winners tally with a late effort in the Fast Six session at Toronto.

The Australian recorded his best of 59.43s with just 5s remaining in the final 10 minute segment.

The time edged team-mate Simon Pagenaud by 0.18s, marking the fourth time the Penske duo has locked out the front-row this season.

Third Penske driver Juan Pablo Montoya lead the early part of the Fast Six session before ending up third.

The Indianapolis 500 winner will line-up alongside Scott Dixon, while Sebastien Bourdais and Luca Filippi completed the top six.

The first two segments were punctuated by red flags, much to the detriment of regular front-runners Helio Castroneves (seventh) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (16th).

The reds were caused by a spin from Sebastian Saavedra in Q1 and a crash for Rodolfo Gonzalez in Q2.

Power’s 41st career pole meanwhile moves him ahead of Penske legend Rick Mears on the pole position honour roll, drawing to within two of the highest active driver, Castroneves.

“Starting on the pole is great to keep out of any messes, and obviously IndyCar races are never straightforward so it’s just awesome to get the pole,” said Power.

“It’s a long (race) day and we’ll see what we can do. You’ve really got to drive around here.

“It’s all man-handling because you’ve got those slippery surfaces in the middle of the corners, so you’ve got to be on the wheel a lot.”
