Liam Lawson

Euroformula Open

Liam Lawson chalked up victory in the opening Euroformula Open race of the weekend on the Pau street circuit.

The New Zealander dominated the 27 lap race to win by more than 16 seconds from Julian Hanses and Marino Sato in second and third, while Jack Doohan was the last classified finisher, five laps down.

Billy Monger then claimed a narrow victory in Race 2, the 78th Grand Prix de Pau, ahead of Nicolai Kjaergaard and Yuki Tsunoda.

Both Lawson and Doohan were retirements from the race, Lawson after 14 laps and Doohan after just three.

Australian Calan Williams came home in 11th, having finished seventh in the opening race.

A quick turnaround sees Euroformula Open head to Hockenheim in Germany for Round 3 this weekend.

Jaxon Evans

Carrera Cup Deutschland

Jaxon Evans has continued his strong start to the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland with fourth and sixth place finishes at Autodrom Most.

After qualifying fifth for the opening race, the Kiwi climbed a place to be the first rookie home behind race winner Larry ten Voorde.

Julien Andlauer was second from Michael Ammermuller, Evans just a second further back and only 4.5s off ten Voorde after the 17 lap race.

Evans then finished sixth in the weekend’s second race, again climbing a place having started seventh.

Ammermuller improved to win the race narrowly from ten Voorde, with Dylan Pereira in third.

Evans crossed the line tucked up behind Jaap van Lagen, again the leading rookie to the flag.

Last year’s Porsche Carrera Cup Australia champ now sits fifth in the overall standings and heads the Rookie competition after four races.

Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland returns for its third round at the Red Bull Run in Austria on June 7-8.

Evans, meanwhile, will be in action again this weekend with Porsche Supercup at the Monaco Grand Prix, starting on Thursday.

ADAC GT Masters

ADAC GT Masters

Kelvin van der Linde and Patrick Niederhauser handed Audi its first win of the season in the ADAC GT Masters competition.

Niederhauser headed the race from pole in the opening encounter of the weekend before handing the car over to van der Linde, who steered it home to win by four seconds.

The Lamborghini of Mirko Bortolotti and Christian Engelhart was second from Max Hofer and Christopher Mies’ Audi.

Australian Aidean Read was sixth in the Mercedes-AMG GT3 he shared with Marvin Dienst, the pair dropping to 13th in Race 2.

Callaway Competition’s Marvin Kirchhofer and Markus Pommer won that affair by 3.4s over the Rolf Ineichen and Franck Perera Lamborghini Huracan, with a second Corvette C7 GT3 in third courtesy of Sven Barth and David Jahn.

Austria hosts the next round of the ADAC GT Masters series on June 7-8.

F4 British Championship

Australian Bart Horsten has left Thruxton with finishes of fourth, third, and seventh in Rounds 7 to 9 of British Formula 4.

Horsten qualified only eighth for the first race of the weekend but gained net four positions in a dramatic affair despite a minor off along the way.

With the top five reversed for the start of the Round 8 race, Horsten took the lead on the opening lap but would lost positions to Zane Maloney and, on the second-last lap, Sebastian Alvarez.

He finished in the same position as that from which he started in the finale.

Luke Browning won the Round 7 race and Maloney the other two, with Louis Foster leading the championship and Horsten fourth ahead of the next meeting at Croft on June 15-16.

Super Formula

Yuhi Sekiguchi came from 16th on the grid to win Race 2 of the Super Formula season at Autopolis while New Zealander Nick Cassidy finished eighth.

Sekiguchi (Team Impul) took the nominal race lead when he rounded up pole-sitter Yuji Kunimoto on Lap 13 and retained the position when he eventually pitted on Lap 40.

Naoki Yamamoto (Dandelion Racing) made up just as many positions from 17th on the grid, while Cassidy (Team TOM’s) got by Hiroaki Ishiura on the final lap to collect a point.

Round 3 will be held at Sugo on June 22-23.

Alex Marquez

Moto2, Moto3

Both of the Marquez brothers won at Le Mans as Alex broke a drought of over a year in Moto2.

Thomas Luthi (Dynavolt Intact GP Kalex) led the field away, followed by Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex), before the Spaniard made his move on Lap 4.

Xavi Vierge (EG 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex) and then Simone Corsi held second position during the first 10 laps before the latter, who started 18th, crashed his Tasca Kalex at the back end of the circuit.

From then, Marquez enjoyed a lead of over a second until the end of the 25-lap encounter, with Jorge Navarro (Lightech Speed Up) finishing second and Augusto Fernandez (Flexbox/Pons Kalex) third.

The latter’s team-mate, Lorenzo Baldassarri, retains the championship lead despite an early crash which dislocated his right shoulder, while Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Kalex) was another non-finisher due to a mid-race fall.

In Moto3, John McPhee became both the fifth different pole-sitter and race winner in as many rounds this season.

Round 6 will be held at Mugello on May 31-June 2.

Thed Björk pic: Cyan Racing

FIA World Touring Car Cup

Thed Björk won two races and Esteban Guerrieri the other in the fourth WTCR event of 2019 at Zandvoort.

In Race 1, Björk converted pole into a Cyan Racing Lynk & Co one-two as Yvan Muller placed second.

Guerrieri (Honda) also went from first on the grid to victory in the reverse grid race, staving off Benjamin Leuchter (Volkswagen).

Björk claimed the third race of the weekend after team orders were twice issued due to concerns over a possible penalty following contact between he and Yann Ehrlacher on the run to the first corner.

He trails Guerrieri by 11 points at the top of the standings with the Nurburgring next on June 20-22.
