Blancpain GT Series Asia

Nick Foster was the top Australian in Round 2 of Blancpain GT Series Asia at Thailand’s Chang International Circuit, as the GruppeM Mercedes team dominated the weekend.

Foster, along with HubAuto Corsa Ferrari co-driver Leo Ye Hongli, crossed the line second in Race 1, before dropping to sixth in Race 2.

Mitchell Gilbert finished seventh in Race 1 aboard the OD Racing Team WRT Audi ahead of fellow Australian Audi driver Josh Burdon in 10th for Absolute Racing.

In Race 2, Burdon worked his way to seventh, followed by the Shae Davies/Sandy Stuvik-driven #911 Craft Bamboo Racing Porsche in eighth, which improved on its 11th place finish in Race 1.

Tim Slade and Morris Chen finished 13th and 14th in the weekend’s two races in the #28 HubAuto Corsa Ferrari, Slade having qualified the car on the front row for Race 2 and started strongly behind Maxi Buhk.

Craft Bamboo’s sister #991 Porsche of Aidan Read and Darryl O’Young, meanwhile, took home 14th and 17th, while AMAC Motorsport were not classified in either of the races.

GruppeM’s #999 Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Patric Niederhauser and Markus Pommer won the opening race, while sister #888 Mercedes of Alexander Mattschull and Buhk prevailed in Race 2.

Blancpain GT Series Asia now heads to Suzuka for Round 3 on June 30 – July 1.

Super Formula

The Round 2 Super Formula race at Autopolis was called off due to heavy rain.

Nick Cassidy was due to start third on the grid having set the fourth-fastest time in qualifying, with fastest qualifier Ryo Hirakawa serving a grid penalty for a crash last time out at Suzuka.

However, after a delayed warm-up, the race never came due to rain which significantly affected visibility.

Hirakawa, with whom Cassidy drives in Super GT, still earns one point for his qualifying effort.

Naoki Yamamoto continues to top the table, six positions in front of Cassidy, ahead of Round 3 at Sugo on May 26-27.
