The future of V8 Supercars in New Zealand continues to hang in the balance following the Auckland City Council’s request for more time to deliberate on its funding plans.
A decision on whether or not to back a V8 Supercars proposal, understood to detail plans for the category to race at Pukekohe from 2013, was to have been made yesterday.
According to a Fairfax NZ report, Auckland’s Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) department has been asked to submit a revised assessment of V8 Supercars’ proposal to the council by the end of the month.
Yesterday saw ATEED’s initial report presented in a publically-excluded section of the council meeting due to its commercial sensitivity – a situation that raised eyebrows among some councillors.
The drawn out process of finding a home for the V8 Supercars in New Zealand comes after the early demise of the Hamilton street event.
The Hamilton City Council eventually struck a deal to terminate the contract it had with V8 Supercars two years short of its scheduled duration after its cost structure proved unsustainable.
Prior to the move to Hamilton in 2008, the V8 Supercars had competed at Pukekohe for seven consecutive seasons.
