Audi nabs WEC pole from Porsche in Japan

thumbThe resurgent Audi LMP1 team has ensured another titanic fight against Porsche after taking pole position for Round 7 of the World Endurance Championship at Fuji.

In a busy 20-minute session which saw several different machines at the top, the #8 Audi of Lucas di Grassi and Loic Duval prevailed.

The pair, who will be joined by Oliver Jarvis, established a two-lap average of 1:23.57 after responding to the earlier benchmark times set by Toyota.

Audi’s lead R18 e-tron quattro took the pole by a miniscule margin with Mark Webber and Timo Bernhard falling short by 0.02s.

Webber lifted the #1 Porsche a couple of places with a late flurry with just two minutes remaining.

Kiwi Brendon Hartley will join Webber and Bernhard in the 6 Hour race as the trio attempt their late season rival which has seen them move to fourth in the points standings.

Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima were in close attendance, falling just 0.16s short of the pole and will start from third.

The sister TS050 Hybrid of Stephane Sarrazin and Kamui Kobayashi was fourth with the #7 Audi of Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer fifth.

Porsche’s WEC leading #2 machine for Neel Jani and Romain Dumas was anchored down in sixth position, just ahead of the Rebellion R-ONE AER.

In LMP2, the G-Drive Racing Oreca-Nissan of Roman Rusinov, Will Stevens and Alex Brundle claimed pole from the Nissan-powered Signatech Alpine of Gustavo Menezes, Nicolas Lapierre and Stephane Richelmi.

Chip Ganassi’s Ford GTs have taken the first two spots in GTE Pro which was topped by Stefan Mucke and Olivier Pla.

The pair led home the sister Ford driven by Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell which pipped the AF Corse Ferrari 488s.

Aston Martin has claimed pole in GTE Am through the Vantage V8 of Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda.
