Baird fends off Richards for Carrera Cup Race 2 win

Reigning Carrera Cup champion Craig Baird has taken his second race win for the weekend in the all-Porsche races in Adelaide, but he didn’t have it all his own way today.

The victory also signifies Baird’s 50th race win in the Australian Carrera Cup category, a feat only achieved by the Kiwi driver.

Baird made the best of the start and, like Race 1, led from start to finish, but the win didn’t come as easy as yesterday with a valiant challenge from Steve Richards.

On Lap 8 at the hairpin, Richards speared down the inside of Baird and briefly took the lead, only for Baird to retake the front running two corners later.

Baird’s repass saw minor contact between them, allowing front-row starter Nick Percat back into the fight.

The top three remained in the same order to the flag, with Warren Luff showing them in fourth place.

Shae Davies repeated yesterday’s result with fifth, while Karl Reindler was forced to fight through after losing spots after a Lap 1 clash with Steve Johnson at the exit of the hairpin.

Johnson headed directly into pit lane and out of the race.

Michael Patrizi took seventh ahead of Max Twigg, James Koundouris and Damien Flack, who ended the race in controversy after collecting the back of Tony Bates and sending him into the concrete wall/

The final Carrera Cup race for the weekend will be held at 1310 tomorrow.
