Carrera Cup sweep boosts Baird’s title hopes

Craig Baird scored the ‘Creek Sweep’

Craig Baird has completed a clean-sweep of the Carrera Cup races to win his first round of the 2014 season.

Baird who has battled with the new 991 type 911 made the most of every opportunity this weekend; even after qualifying in seventh.

After coming through to win the opening two races, the final race of the weekend produced another floorless display from the multiple Porsche champion as he pulled away from the start from Steven Richards and Warren Luff.

Behind Sam Power went around and Ash Samadi hit the stationary car and in the process receiving race-ending damage.

A great battle ensued between championship leaders Richards and Luff over the first half of the race. Luff getting through on lap 11 of 14.

He then closed on Baird, but the defending series champion kept his cool to take the win.

A few more dramas behind with Michael Patrizi losing a side window, before going on a wild ride through Turn 1 and making light contact with the tyre barrier.

Shane Smollen completed a solid weekend to win the Elite division with Tony Bates in second and James Bergmuller one place further back.

The final three rounds of the Carrera Cup are all on the same weekend’s as the Pirtek Enduro Cup for the V8 Supercars. Today’s top-3 will pull double duty with Baird to share the Erebus entry of Lee Holdsworth, Luff joining Garth Tander at HRT and Richards driving alongside Craig Lowndes at Red Bull Racing Australia.
