Jacobson takes Super2 pole at SMP

Garry Jacobson

Garry Jacobson has taken his first Armor All Pole of the season in Round 5 of the Dunlop Super2 Series at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Jacobson went to the top of the order late in the session in the Prodrive Racing Australia FGX Falcon, demoting Paul Dumbrell to second.

The pole is the 2016 series winner’s first since that year’s Bathurst Super2 enduro, after he was stripped of pole at Symmons Plains due to a red flag infringement.

Dumbrell (Eggleston Motorsport VF Commodore) leapt to first position on his first lap, going a full second faster than Jacobson’s practice benchmark before eventually being caught up, but stayed on the front row.

His team-mate Will Brown will line up third on the grid in his best qualifying performance in the series.

Richie Stanaway was fourth-fastest in his first ever qualifying session in a Supercar with an 18th minute effort which left him 0.36s adrift of team-mate Jacobson.

Row 3 will be Anton de Pasquale (Paul Morris Motorsport FGX Falcon) and Jack Le Brocq (MW Motorsport Nissan Altima), and Row 4 Shae Davies (MW Motorsport Nissan Altima) and Macauley Jones (Brad Jones Racing VF Commodore).

Series leader Todd Hazelwood never seriously threatened for pole as he put his Matt Stone Racing VF Commodore ninth on the grid, one position ahead of Richard Muscat (Garry Rogers Motorsport VF Commodore).

Jack Perkins’ engine problems in practice proved terminal, with the #4 Dragon Motor Racing VF Commodore out for the rest of the weekend.

On-track, the session again largely went without incident.

Race 1 (18 laps) follows this afternoon at 1445 AEST/local time.
