Lorenzo extends MotoGP title lead with British win

Jorge Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo has extended his lead in the MotoGP world championship by winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone today.

The Spaniard worked his way into the lead, passing Australian Honda star Casey Stoner to score his third-consecutive win.

Stoner held the lead in the early stages, only to watch Lorenzo pass and gap him.

Stoner was given a glimmer of hope in the flossing laps when Lorenzo had a minor moment, but Lorenzo knuckled down to take another win – less than a week after announcing he had resigned a two year deal with Yamaha.

Stoner held off a valiant effort from team-mate Dani Pedrosa to secure second and third for the factory Honda team.

San Carlo Gresini pole-sitter Alvaro Bautista finished fourth, ahead of factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies, who scored the best result of his difficult 2012 season.

Tech 3 rider Cal Crutchlow finished a fighting sixth after suffering a fractured left ankle earlier in the weekend. The local British rider secured sixth on the final lap, passing Ducati’s Nicky Hayden.

Eighth place went to Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda), Valentino Rossi (Ducati) and Hector Barbera (Pramac) rounded out the top 10 finishers.

Tech 3 rider Andrea Dovizioso was the highest profile rider to crash. He returned to the circuit to finish a lap down.
