The FIM has announced it will outlaw the use of winglets in Moto3 with immediate effect.
The aerodynamic devices have already been banned from Moto2 and were set to be prohibited from Moto3 in 2017.
However, a meeting of the FIM Grand Prix Commission this week has decided to bring the ban forward after receiving approval from Moto3 manufacturers.
“In March of this year it was agreed that aerodynamic wings in the Moto2 class would be banned immediately. It was also agreed that wings would be banned in the Moto3 class from 2017,” read a statement from FIM.
“Following a unanimous proposal from all Manufacturers in the Moto3 Working Group, the Grand Prix Commission have confirmed that the ban on aerodynamic wings in the Moto3 class will now be effective immediately.”
Winglets continue to be a hot topic of discussion in the premier class with the devices currently being utilised by Honda, Ducati and Yamaha, while Suzuki is in the process of developing its own version.
Riders have already called for the devices to be banned on safety grounds.
