Jack Perkins has taken his first Aussie Racing Cars round win, securing the victory at the Muscle Car Masters event at Eastern Creek.
The Wilson Security Racing V8 Supercars endurance driver qualified 10th in sodden conditions but worked his way through to the front of the pack immediately. He did enough over the two days to take his maiden win.
“After qualifying 10th in the wet, I wasn’t sure how the weekend would pan out, but after a small change to front roll bar for Race 1, the car was a jet,” Perkins explained.
“Race 1 was really good fun, coming from 10th to first in a lap and then pulling away from the field was a good feeling, and the conditions were tough.”
Perkins won the first race, while title contender Adam Gowans took victory in Race 2, his rival Kyle Clews won Race 3 before Perkins took the all-important final win.
“In the last race, the three of us (Clews and Gowans) were able to pull a gap from the rest of the field,” Perkins said.
“Clews was bump-drafting me down the straight because I think he wanted a gap from Gowans, as they’re both fighting for the Championship this year. Turn one is 100 percent flat out in these cars and with another car one centimeter off my tail it takes the rear wing away and it’s similar to what the NASCAR guys talk about.”
Perkins is a huge advocate of the pint-sized racing class, and also enjoyed competing at the popular Muscle Car Masters meeting.
“The racing is always so close in these cars, and with a big straight and long corners at Eastern Creek, the slip streaming is huge,” he said.
“The Muscle Car Masters event was great to be a part of, there were some great old cars there and the crowd on Sunday was as big as a V8 race!”
The final round of the Aussie Racing Cars Series will be held at Morgan Park in early November where the title between Clews and Gowans will go down to the wire – just two points separates them …
