Premat quickest in first co-driver practice

Frenchman Alexandre Premat has underlined the speed of Volvo’s S60 by topping the first of two co-driver practice sessions at Sandown.

Premat ran a string of fast times in the final 10 minutes, including a best of 1:09.90s that proved 0.13s quicker than next best Jonathon Webb.

Webb had displaced Paul Dumbrell from the top of the order with 10 minutes remaining after the Red Bull Holden had held sway for much of the opening half-hour.

Tony D’Alberto proved the quickest of the Walkinshaw co-drivers in fourth ahead of Alex Davison in brother Will’s Erebus Mercedes.

Chris Pither and Greg Ritter meanwhile impressed to take sixth and seventh in the entries usually driven by Dale Wood and Robert Dahlgren respectively.

The Volvos were always expected to suit the Sandown layout, which is dominated by two long straights.

By contrast, the four Nissan co-drivers were all in the bottom half of the order, led by Dean Fiore in 14th.

Just 1.2s covered the entire 25 car field, with Chaz Mostert’s co-driver Paul Morris at the foot of the order.

The third and final practice session of the day is also for co-drivers only and will get underway at 1435.
