The Dunlop Super2 Series has confirmed changes to its format this season including the introduction of Friday races at selected events.

Organisers have confirmed the second tier Supercars series will adopt a new four race format at Symmons Plains, Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park events.

These meetings will see the inclusion of races on Fridays with the category set to contest one 40 minute practice session prior to qualifying.

This weekend’s Clipsal 500 continues the tradition of a race on Friday as apart of an expanded three race schedule, with heats taking place on Saturday and Sunday this year.

Last year’s two race format remains in place at Townsville and for the new season finale on the streets of Newcastle.

Meanwhile, the Wilson Security Sandown 500 event will see the category compete in two races instead of the usual three, while the Bathurst 1000 round will be a non-points scoring event.

“Introducing a four-race format at selected rounds is a great step forward for our competitors,” Super2 category manager Paul Martin told Supercars.com.

“Racing on Friday at four events means that Super2 will form a significant component of the television broadcasts, providing race action for fans alongside the Supercars sessions.

“In total we have five more races than in 2016, providing the young stars of Super2 more opportunity than ever to develop and showcase their talents.

“The field we have is arguably the strongest we’ve seen since 2012, where Scott McLaughlin, Chaz Mostert, Scott Pye and Nick Percat battled it out.”

Series organisers have also announced that the category will continue to operate on the older generation Dunlop tyre.

The Dunlop Super2 Series will welcome a 23-car grid for this weekend’s Clipsal 500 season opener.
