Nicolas Stati and Daniel Quimby shared race wins at Round 2 of the US F4 Championship, held at Mid-Ohio while Patrick Heuzenroeder just missed top three GB3 results at the Hungaroring.
At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Race 1, AGI Sport’s Stati led start to finish, but initially fellow front row starter Atlantic Racing Team’s Quimby had his nose in front. Stati had the preferred line and emerged in front. Pablo Benites shadowed Stati and was also able to slot ahead of Quimby.
Nearly 10mins in, the latter seized his opportunity to take second at Turn 1. Benites was then challenged by Alex Crosbie and Connor Roberts until mid-race contact from Benites sent Roberts rolling into the Turn 4 gravel trap. At the resumption, Quimby was right on Stati’s gearbox but unable to complete the pass, and Stati took the win from Quimby and Crosbie.
Heavy rain on Sunday morning caused the cancellation of Race 2. After the start of Race 3, Stati and Quimby raced side-by-side from the Keyhole to Turn 4 where the latter hit the lead. Quimby slowly pulled away while Stati was a comfortably second and Benites third.
The next round of US F4 is at New Jersey Motorsport Park on July 26-28.
At Hungaroring for the fourth round of the GB3 Championship, JHR Developments’ Heuzenroeder scored his best finish to date. In Race 1 he started seventh, dropped two places before he regained one for eighth.
He started Race 2 by picking up one spot to be fifth and a post-race penalty to someone who finished ahead, meant fourth in the end, his best race finish in GB3. For the final race, Heuzenroeder started sixth, quickly had fifth and battled for fourth, but further improvement proved elusive.
Fellow Aussie Chris Dittmann Racing’s Flynn Jackes dropped five places to 19th in Race 1 and when he ran wide at one corner on the penultimate lap, dropped another two positions.
At the start of Race 2 Jackes picked up four places before contact at the chicane launched him over the kerbs. That allowed two cars to get by, another two shortly after which left him 17th in the end.
Race 3 started badly with his two teammates clashing and Jackes just able to avoid them. However, he lost time and was stuck in a train of cars and unable to gain places, ultimately placing 15th.
Round 5 of the championship is at Zandvoort in the Netherlands on July 12-14.
