The Car of the Future’s control brake package is edging closer to its track debut as V8 Supercars continues to lock down its 2013 regulations.
The new package will not differ greatly from that currently seen in the series, with V8 Supercars electing to stick with cast-iron rotors instead of making a mooted switch to carbon-ceramic units.
The new rotors and calipers will be larger than their predecessors in order to take advantage of the COTF’s 18-inch wheel and tyre package, while drivers are expected to be given a new pad option to choose from.
Although the tender process for the control rotors and calipers had initially been slated to include track testing, V8 Supercars COTF project leader Mark Skaife confirmed that the three-year contract has already been awarded.
Speedcafe.com understands that the tender has been won by AP Racing, bringing to an end Alcon’s six-year involvement with the series.
According to Skaife, the new package will tick all of the required boxes for the category.
“It’s is not a long way away in terms of specification from where we are, which is a purposeful result in terms of the cost to the category and the specifications,” Skaife told Speedcafe.com.
“Given that the car is lighter and that the brake will have a greater thermal capacity, it (the new brake) will inevitably assist with the quality of the racing.
“There’s a lot of thought and a lot of analysis that has been applied to it, and we’re very happy with the outcome.”
Skaife confirmed that V8 Supercars plans to run the new brake set-up during the final stages of its tyre testing program.
The tyre testing has now been extended following an inconclusive day at Winton last week, where a new and more aggressive soft tyre was being tested against the existing compound.
