Scott McLaughlin continued Volvo’s ominous form at the Wilson Security Sandown 500 in the final practice session ahead of qualifying.
The 21-year-old waited until just five seconds of the 40 minute session remained to clock his fastest lap, recording a 1:08.98s.
The effort proved just 0.046s clear of Garth Tander’s Walkinshaw Commodore.
The #33 Volvo has topped three of the four sessions ahead of qualifying following co-driver Alex Premat’s efforts on Friday afternoon.
“We didn’t get onto greens until the end,” said McLaughlin after the session.
“We’re tuning our car up to make it better, but that’s what everyone else is doing as well
“We’ll see where we are in qualifying.”
Walkinshaw drivers Tander, James Courtney and Tim Slade and the Red Bull Holden of Jamie Whincup traded the top spot for the majority of Practice 4.
Courtney wound up third from Lee Holdsworth, David Reynolds, Shane van Gisbergen, Jason Bright, Tim Slade, Craig Lowndes and Whincup, who was bumped to 10th by several late improvers.
Only 12 of the 25 co-drivers cut laps during the session, with all teams running their primary drivers for the bulk of the 40 minutes.
A 20 minute qualifying session will get underway at 1215 ahead of the afternoon’s two qualifying races.
