Only a miracle will give Will Davison a chance of winning the V8 Supercar Championship Series after a horror pit road entry incident in Race 24 at Barbagallo Raceway.
The Toll Holden Racing Team driver did not finish today’s race, and now sits 281 points behind Team Vodafone leader Jamie Whincup. Whincup needs to finish 28th or better in either race at the Sydney Telstra 500 to clinch the title.
In other words, unless something freakish happens to Whincup in Sydney, he will become the first back-to-back V8 champ since Marcos Ambrose (2003/04).
Davison, understandably, was gutted with the outcome of Race 24 of the championship after he slipped on fluid at the entrance of pit lane, hit the tyre wall and damaged his steering.
“It’s devastating and I’m just numb inside,” the #22 Toll HRT driver said.
“There was a massive amount of fluid on the pit entry, which I had no idea about until I got there. I hit the first amount braking for the 40kmh line and managed to pull it up in time, and I breathed a sigh of relief, but then in the kink into pit lane there was more (fluid) and I just understeered straight into the wall … it wasn’t what you’d expect.

“I wanted to do the best job possible and have a hard clean fight with Jamie – we worked so hard to get where we were and if we weren’t good enough on the day we could cop it on the chin, but to have such an unfortunate incident it’s really hard to prepare for.”
Davison didn’t totally concede the title, but offered congratulations to Whincup.
“Jamie’s done another great job this year,” he said.
“I just wanted to chase him all the way to the end and not hand it to him on a plate like we did today.
“I’m not going to Sydney with a championship on my mind, we’re now going there to enjoy the weekend, try end the year on a high and carry some momentum into 2010.”
