Rising Australian single seater star Alex Peroni has clinched the Monoplace Challenge Formula Renault title at Portugal’s Estoril circuit.
The 16-year-old from Tasmania secured the French-based series crown in style by recording a comfortable win in tricky wet conditions in the opening heat.
Peroni established a three second lead from pole on the opening lap before going on to take the chequered flag from Dutch driver Rinus van Kalmthout by 4.12s.
With title rival Gilles Heriau back in fifth, Peroni claimed the championship with two races to spare.
Peroni continued his impressive display by taking out a shortened second race.
Starting from second on the grid, the Hobart racer overtook pole-sitter van Kalmthout on the first lap.
However, a multiple car pile-up brought the race to a premature end on lap 3.
“I felt confident going into Race 1, because the track was wet like it was when I raced here last week in the Formula Renault Eurocup round,” said Peroni.
“I got a good start, and was able to build a lead in the first two laps that I could manage for the rest of the race.
“It was a great way to clinch the championship.
“The track was even wetter in Race 2, and I wanted to start well so that I could have a clear track ahead. I managed to pass van Kalmthout into the first corner and open up a gap.
“I’m very happy with the result in such bad track conditions.
“Thanks to Stefano Turchetto and everyone at TS Corse for their perfect car preparation and support throughout this year’s Monoplace Challenge.
“It’s incredible what we have achieved together, and I’ll always be grateful to them.”
Peroni will contest the final race of the Monoplace Challenge season later today.
