Max Vidau has continued his strong start to the Australian Formula Ford Championship by taking out two races and the round honours in Round 2 at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park.
Vidau won the first two races in his Sonic Motor Racing Mygale, while Hunter McElrea finally bagged a victory in Race 3 after an eventful weekend.
“It was close racing all weekend, but the Sonic guys gave me an awesome car and it’s great to be leading the points heading to the next round at Winton,” said the 15-year-old Vidau, who opened up a series lead over Jayden Ojeda.
Liam McLellan (Borland Racing Developments Spectrum) finished the round in second overall, climbing from ninth on the grid to fourth in the opener before picking up a pair of second placings.
Cooper Murray (Dream Motorsport Mygale) completed the round podium with race results of fifth, fifth, and third.
McElrea, son of Carrera Cup and Australian GT team owner Andy, took out the Shell Helix pole position award but finished only 19th after an early error.
The young Kiwi scythed through the field in Race 2, taking over the lead on Lap 9 and going on to cross the finish line first, but a post-race penalty for contact saw him relegated to 10th.
McElrea would not be denied a third time, however, with a win in Race 3 giving him sixth for the round.
Jordan Boys won the Shell Helix award for highest-placed privateer, fifth overall.
The round also incorporated the NSW State Championship, with the Duratec class won by Jackson Burton and Kent class by Mitchell Maddren.
Round 3 of the national series supports the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship at the Winton Super Sprint, from May 19-21.
