POLL: Should there be fewer Supercars events?

Supercars could be set to race in fewer events in 2020

Supercars is working towards a reduced 14-event calendar for 2020 with possibly two current meetings not making the cut.

The championship had been aiming to release next year’s schedule at this weekend’s Watpac Townsville 400 but with work continuing to finalise the calendar, a reveal is now not expected until the middle of July.

Supercars has already confirmed that the 2020 season will start a week earlier with the traditional Superloop Adelaide 500 opener moving to a February date slot.

While the calendar is anticipated to feature one less event compared to 2019, it is also likely to include a winter break.

Sydney Motorsport Park is set to return in the first quarter of the year and is expected to host one of two night races, with Perth’s Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway likely to retain its floodlit meeting.

However, Sydney’s inclusion could mean that established events could face the chop.

Speedcafe.com understands that Phillip Island and Winton are at risk of losing their spots on the calendar with both venues out of contract.

Having been mainstays in recent years, the circuits last dropped off the calendar in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

Likewise, all three Queensland events, namely the Watpac Townsville 400, Century Batteries Ipswich SuperSprint and the Vodafone Gold Coast 600, are also in search of new contract and a funding agreement from state government.

Sandown is also out of contract but it is expected that the historic Melbourne circuit will retain a berth, although it has been mooted that it will host a single driver sprint round instead of the 500km enduro, which appears likely to head to The Bend Motorsport Park.

According to Supercars boss Sean Seamer, the draft calendars that have been shown to teams have been met positively.

The prospect of fewer events will save teams money and ease the stresses and pressure on resources, which is critical as the series looks to rein in costs and improve the championship’s sustainability.

But Speedcafe.com wants to know your thoughts on the prospect of a slightly reduced calendar for 2020.

Would you like to see fewer events next year?
