Two-time and reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel does not believe that tomorrow's first practice sessions of the season will provide an insight into the form of the 2012 Formula 1 grid.
A clear pecking order failed to emerge over the four official pre-season tests due to the apparent closeness of the field and the variety of development programs being run by the teams.
While the cars will hit the Albert Park circuit for two 90 minute sessions tomorrow, the German believes that only Saturday's qualifying session will reveal the true outright speed of the cars.
“I think generally, as others have said already, it's difficult to read testing 100%,” said Vettel of his 2012 chances.
“First of all it's good to have a good feeling about yourself, about the car and how you feel in the car. We were quite happy with that, it didn't always go to plan but I think overall we can be happy.
“It's a bit unknown as to what is going to happen, so it's good to finally be here, and there's only a couple of days left before we really find out.
“Tomorrow we will not know that much more regarding the pace. Surely the ones that will be on top will be the ones to beat, but again we don't know about the fuel, etc.
“Really we will have to wait until Saturday, and then after a couple of races to see the trend. Sooner than that is usually not possible.”
This season Vettel is aiming to join Grand Prix greats Jan Manual Fangio and Michael Schumacher in winning three consecutive World Drivers' Championships.
Although Vettel says that Schumacher was his hero growing up, the now 24-year-old insists that the potential to reach the milestone will not in any way alter mindset this year.
“I am here to win the championship, so that's the target – whether it is the third or not doesn't make a difference,” said Vettel.
“It would be a nice thing, but as I said, the reason why we're here is to race and to win.”
