Since pairing up with Tasmanian car owners Tim and Jan McKinnell, Maryborough, Queensland-based Wingless Sprint driver Scott Thomsen has steadily been gaining momentum, which recently reached an exciting peak.
It was back in the 2015-16 season that Thomsen and his brother Brody first met the McKinnells during a visit to the Apple Isle to contest the Tasmanian Title, with the friendship continuing to form between the families when Thomsen returning to Tasmania the following season to participate in the Australian Championship.
Making a return to the track in the latter stages of last season after a stint on the sidelines, the partnership between Thomsen and the McKinnells, who are based in Powranna just outside of Launceston and own the Powranna Plant Hire business, began.
With the 29-year-old driver piloting the Tas # 24 Powranna Plant Hire supported Cool car during last season’s Queensland Title, experiencing an unfortunate DNF, the decision was made to extend his drive throughout the 2018-19 season; a decision that has proven fruitful for both parties.
Getting the season underway down south in the McKinnells’ home state with the Tasmanian Title, Thomsen well and truly proved himself amongst the local competition, qualifying in pole position before coming home in the runner-up spot to get his season off to a cracking start.
Transporting the car north to the Sunshine State, Thomsen continued to display pleasing performances, reaching new heights at Lismore Speedway in New South Wales when he achieved a well-deserved victory in the 100-lap Australian Grand Prix.
While he didn’t contest the full Queensland schedule, missing a few Ian Boettcher Race Parts Super Series rounds due to business commitments, Thomsen once again proved that blue-ribbon events seem to be his forte, most recently clinching the third Queensland Title crown of his career on home soil at Maryborough Speedway.
“It was a great feeling to winning my third Queensland Title, as well as the Australian Grand Prix, but to be able to do it for Tim and Jan made it that much better,” expressed Thomsen, who also participated in this season’s Australian Championship at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway, placing 14th in B main two amongst over 100 rivals.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity Tim and Jan have given me to race their car and we’ve become great family friends in the process. I couldn’t be happier with how our season has gone and to be able to thank them in the best way possible makes it all worthwhile.”
