Mark Webber has urged out-of-contract Jenson Button to leave Formula 1 and embark upon a career in sportscars.
The former Red Bull Racing driver, who retired from F1 last year to join Porsche’s return to top flight sportscar racing, responded to a message on Twitter from the 2009 world champion.
Webber issued a reply encouraging Button to leave F1 and join him in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
“Matey just sign that sports car contract and get on with it. Be mega to have you with/against us next year.#greatracing #JB22,” said Webber via Twitter.
Porsche has already confirmed its line up for next year’s WEC campaign but Button continues to be linked to a move to the championship, while his F1 career hangs in the balance.
McLaren is evaluating it’s options regarding its driver line-up pending the expected arrival of double world champion Fernando Alonso to the Woking squad.
The team is expected to announce Alonso’s arrival before the final round of the season at Abu Dhabi. Button is also hoping to unveil his plans for 2015 shortly.
