Tyre bundles could line the inside of the exit of Turn 8 at the Adelaide street circuit next year – the opening event of the V8 Supercars Championship.
After its yearly safety review, CAMS track safety delegation has proposed a move to line the inside wall of Brabham Straight on the Clipsal 500 track, starting at the exit of the infamous Turn 8 corner.
The move to a tyre-lined straight is being looked at to increase the safety for drivers who collide with the outside wall and career across the circuit into the inside wall.
The South Australian Motor Sport Board in preparing its final submission for its circuit licence for the 2013 event and a final decision is expected to come sometime January.
Clipsal 500 Adelaide spokesperson Mike Drewer told Speedcafe.com that the matter was “being looked into by our engineers.”
“The concept is to provide a buffer for cars that may strike the barriers on drivers left on Turn 8 and then cannon across the track,” Drewer said.
“The final decision on all these matters of course is with the CAMS track safety people.”
The Clipsal 500 Adelaide will be held on February 28-March 3, with the opening event of the new-look V8 Supercars Championship to be supported by the Dunlop Series, Carrera Cup, Australian GT and Aussie Racing Cars.
X-Games driver Ken Block will complete his wild track demonstrations, while other off-track events will keep fans entertained, including the Armor All Extreme Top 50 Car Show. The show will include a vehicle called ‘Wild Cad’ and is regarded as one of the world’s top custom cars.
