British F4 race winner Petru Florescu joins Douglas Motorsport for 2017 British F3

MEDIA RELEASE: Romanian racer Petru Florescu will compete in the 2017 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship with Douglas Motorsport, it has been confirmed today (23 February).

Florescu graduates to the UK’s premier single-seater category having mounted a strong title challenge in last year’s F4 British Championship, with the 18-year-old eventually finishing sixth overall with five wins. He now joins Douglas Motorsport in British F3, with the Corby-based outfit looking to build upon a brilliant 2016 season which saw the team score three wins with Thomas Randle and Enaam Ahmed.

Florescu, who hails from the Romanian capital Bucharest, combined his British F4 duties last year with outings in a number of other championships, including Eurocup Formula Renault and EuroFormula Open.

He began his single-seater career in the then named MSA Formula category during 2015 and prior to that enjoyed a glittering karting career, competing in various world-level events and finishing as runner-up in the 2013 WSK Final Cup in the KF Junior category.

Florescu will also compete in EuroFormula Open during 2017 and will not take part in the British F3 rounds which already clash with his existing commitments in that championship.

Florescu said: “I love racing in the UK. I think the tracks here and the level of competition in British Formula 3 really separate the top drivers from the average ones. I am very happy to be able to add five rounds of the British F3 Championship to my programme this season and I am excited to be working with Wayne Douglas and his team. They are all very focused and very good at their job. We just clicked instantly and I am sure we will do well together this year, especially since I love driving the British F3 car!”

Wayne Douglas, Team Principal of Douglas Motorsport, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Petru to our British F3 team for the 2017 season. He proved last year in British F4 that he is an extremely fast driver and we look forward to helping him continue that success during the British F3 rounds he contests with us this year.”

The 2017 BRDC British Formula 3 season begins at Oulton Park on Easter Weekend (15-17 April) with the 2017 season consisting of 24 races across eight rounds at some of the UK and Europe’s best circuits.
