Markulin on the pace

It didn’t matter that Peter Markulin got his 2018-19 season in AMCA Nationals underway slightly late, with the driver wasting little time in getting up to speed, off the back of two front-running results from as many starts.

Making his season debut at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway on Boxing Night, a hard-charging performance saw Markulin bounce back after slipping to the rear of the field to come home in a solid second place behind Russ Hardy.

Determined to build on this result when he returned to the track just a few nights later, having made only minor adjustments to his car’s setup, the NSW # 91 Daracon Group / Buck Engineering backed Kempy pilot was a model of consistency, picking up a runner-up finish and a win in his heat races, which saw him sitting equal highest in points with Terry Pankhurst.

Being awarded the pole position start for the feature race by virtue of recording the faster lap during his heat races, Markulin made the most of his start, immediately launching himself into the lead, where he was able to remain throughout the 20-lap distance to clinch his first feature-race win of the season.

“It was good to pick up our first win of the season and it was definitely thanks to our solid car setup,” said Markulin, from the small town of Wyee in the Lake Macquarie region of NSW, who initially introduced his 350ci Chev during last season’s Australian Title at Ballarat’s Redline Raceway (Vic), where he ran seventh.

“Our setup suited the track from the outset, allowing us to qualify up the front of the feature race which made all the difference in our result.

“So far, it’s been a great start to the season and we’re really pleased with the speed we’ve been able to produce. Hopefully we can keep it up in the upcoming Australian Title and come away with another pleasing result.”

Set to take place on January 18 and 19 at Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway, this will be Markulin’s seventh Australian AMCA National Title attempt, and while he knows that it won’t be easy amid the high quality field, he’s hoping to back up last season’s result with another top-10 finish.

In the 2018-19 season, Markulin is proudly supported by the following sponsors: Daracon Group, Buck Engineering, Burson Auto Parts – Broadmeadow, Hi-Tech Electrical Services, Markulin Consulting, Powerplus Race Fuels, East Coast Protective Coatings, G Force Performance Centre, and No Limit Digital.

Markulin would like to give special thanks to Shane McKinnell for his help and assistance, his mum and dad (Lyn and Danny), his brothers (Paul and John), and his girlfriend (Heather).
