Consistency and a strong qualifying result were everything in last Saturday night’s BloorRail Infrastructure Super Sedan Rumble at Goulburn Speedway, and in the end, it was Queenslander Mat Pascoe who proved to be a deserving winner, collecting a $5,000 reward for his efforts.
While his performance during the 35-lap Super Sedan Rumble-deciding feature race was a dominant one, current Queensland Champion Pascoe certainly didn’t go unchallenged throughout the event, with Darryl Moon keeping him honest in the earlier heat races to earn the pole position start.
Unfortunately unable to keep his fellow front-row starter at bay at the drop of the green flag, Moon was immediately relegated to second place as Pascoe powered into the lead; a position he well and truly made his own, crossing the finish line a whopping 23 seconds clear of his nearest rival.
Despite sitting in the runner-up spot for the majority of the feature race, Moon’s misfortune came in the form of Andrew White, whose late-race charge saw him pip Moon for second place, forcing him to settle for third.
It wasn’t the best of nights for current and two-time National Champion Callum Harper (Tas) in what was his first ever visit to the Goulburn Speedway track.
Struggling to come to grips with the tricky track conditions, Harper qualified on the outside of the second row for the feature race and while he managed to elevate himself to podium contention in the middle stages of the race, he couldn’t quite hold on for the chequered flag, finishing just off the podium in fourth place.
Retaining his starting position, Wayne Dick rounded out the top five, while remaining finishers included Paul Kranitis, Kurt Kranitis, who managed to improve five positions after starting from the rear of the field, Wade Carter and Glen Stoddart.
The sole representative from the ACT in Scott Haynes was the first of the feature-race casualties, completing just five laps before pulling infield. He was later joined by Mark Tower and Mark Sommers.
Earlier in the night, Moon and Pascoe were the best in the heat races, picking up a pair of wins each, while the remaining two victories went the way of Harper and White.
This win couldn’t have come at a better time for Pascoe, who, along with a host of other drivers, is now preparing for this weekend’s National Title, which is set to take place from April 18 to 20 at Moama’s Heartland Raceway. Pascoe will be hoping to continue his winning form, while Harper will be hoping for a return to form as he chases his third National Title crown.
