Gold Coast racer Matthew Brabham has continued his dominant form in the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires with victory in Race 1 of the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Toronto
It is the 19-year-old's sixth straight win in the series out of the seven races contested.
After making a solid start, the MAZDASPEED/Team Andretti Autosport driver opened up a gap of four seconds over his nearest challenger, Juan Piedrahita, by Lap 5, then was content to cruise for the majority of the 25-lap race on the same street track being used for the IndyCar series this weekend.
The son of multiple champion Geoff and grandson of three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jack, put the hammer down again just before the half-distance mark, securing an additional championship point for posting the fastest lap of the race at 1:09.636. This time was faster than anyone else qualified and he stretched his final margin at the finish to 12.445 seconds.
“Once I managed the start I pulled away and broke the tow a little bit from the others,” said Brabham.
“Then it was a matter of getting through the back markers and making sure I kept it off all the walls and kept my focus.
“It was a long race for me out there in front. I can't thank the guys at Andretti enough. They have been predicting the track and have been basically spot-on the whole weekend so hopefully we will do the same tomorrow.
“I am just over the moon at the moment.”
Race 2 of the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Toronto will take place first thing Sunday morning in Toronto.
