Today, most items have a shelf life, and when those items involve technology, then that expiry date tends to come around at a much quicker pace.
Race cars are no different. With a high influx of well-funded teams, the Pro Slammer benchmark is evolving. While in the past running a 5.80 would have guaranteed you a place in the finals, now that number may not see you qualify. 5.60’s or better are the numbers to reach for if you want to be on the winner’s podium at the end of eliminations.
The emergence of new teams has also seen new, modern, high-tech race cars along with highly experienced tuners being flown out to provide winning tune-ups at many events.
While the current ACDelco Pro Slammer Monaro was competitive a few years ago, even winning the Championship in 2017, an eight year old car is considered old in many ways at this level of racing. Four major crashes, numerous paint jobs, the disadvantage of being overweight and not very aerodynamic, the current Pro Slammer is starting to take on the personality of a ‘washed up, tubby 80’s rockstar.’
Team owner Maurice Fabietti decided it was time to upgrade to stay at the pointy end of the field.
In keeping with the Australian-bodied theme and retaining its image as an iconic Australian car the new ACDelco Pro Slammer Monaro has been built by legendary chassis builder Murray Anderson.
The new ACDelco Pro Slammer Monaro has been lowered and narrowed. Essentially the car has been cut-and-shut in half lengthways, having 50mm taken out.
While it will look the same, the car is sleeker, slimmer and more aerodynamic – hello ‘21st century mega-rockstar!’
While the option of building a Camaro was available, the iconic Holden Monaro is a huge hit with fans around the country.
Completely re-thinking the chassis, Murray Anderson has moved towards current US trends as far as building race cars goes. The new car is 100 lbs lighter and together with the aerodynamic improvements will see ETs cut by 1/10 of a second and 5-10 mph increases in speed.
In keeping with the Australian theme, engine components such as the cylinder heads, intake manifold and valve covers were built by Noonan Race Engines in Queensland. Furthermore, with the current 9 inch drop-out diff centres not being able to withstand 3,500+ horsepower, it was decided to go with a 10.5 inch modular, billet aluminium rear end. A new design, custom-made by Sydney-sider and fellow racer Wayne Newby.
Hoses and fittings are being supplied by Taree, NSW business Speedflow. Their lightweight range of braided lines and fittings will guarantee a leak-free race car while keeping weight to a minimum.
Team Owner Maurice Fabietti says “I’ve been building race cars now for over 30 years, but this is by far the best example to come out of my workshop.
We can’t wait for this car to debut at the Nitro Thunder in Sydney in May.
