Supercars star Tony D’Alberto says he is looking forward to making his Jacuzzi Spas Australian Production Cars debut this weekend at Sandown Raceway.
D’Alberto will race alongside Grant Denyer in the brand-new #10 Simply Sports Cars Lotus Exige at the 2018 season opener for the APC series, which will be held across May 11-13.
“I haven’t had any previous experience with the APC, but I have been very jealous of those who get to drive in the Bathurst Six Hour, (that event) has certainly been on my radar,” D’Alberto said.
“When the opportunity came up to join Grant and Simply Sports Cars it was a great way to get involved with the Championship. I know Chaz (Mostert) and some of the boys got involved last year and had a lot of fun.
“I am looking forward to joining back up with Grant who I have raced with before and to just having a bit of fun really.”
While D’Alberto and Denyer have brought home victory together at Sandown Raceway in 2014, the DJR Team Penske enduro driver is not making any big predictions ahead of this weekend’s racing.
“I think we will be going there with our best intentions to try and win, but I am really unsure where everything sits at the moment as I haven’t raced in the category before, so I don’t really know what or who is going to be strong and who we are up against really,” he said.
“We will see where we sit when we get to Sandown and see what we need to work on, hopefully we can come away with a nice result and a bag of points and go on from there.
“(The field) is massive and that is going to be a challenge in itself, but the challenge is for everyone. I think it is fantastic to have such large grids and such support for the category, what a great way to start the year.
“I think the only reason I got a call up from Grant is because I am small enough to fit in the Lotus with him,” laughed D’Alberto. “It is very tight in the cabin!
“It is obviously a great little handling car. I am not sure how it will stack up against everyone else but (we are testing) and we will see how that plays out.”
