Shane van Gisbergen will be the last man out in the Top 10 Shootout after topping the final qualifying session of the season at Sydney Olympic Park.
New champion Mark Winterbottom proved the fast man until the final green tyre run, which he elected to sit out in order to save rubber for the Shootout.
Van Gisbergen put down a 1:27.99s effort with a minute on the clock to move 0.35s ahead of his Ford rival.
“It is pretty hot out there but there is still heaps of grip,” said Van Gisbergen.
“Hopefully we can do a nice safe lap in the Shootout and get on the first two rows.”
A late effort from Scott McLaughlin saw the Volvo slot into second, 0.23s adrift of countryman Van Gisbergen.
The Volvo squad will have two representatives in the Shootout with David Wall managing an outstanding ninth ahead of his final race for the team.
“It is obviously great for everyone on car 34 to give them a bit of pep in their step and hopefully I can try and finish the year on a high,” said Wall.
“This year especially I have been struggling to find a set up I’m happy with in qualifying. Unfortunately it is the last day of the year.”
Winterbottom ended up third ahead of Rick Kelly, who sat sat at the bottom of the order for much of the going after hitting traffic in his first run.
Saturday double winner Jamie Whincup could manage no better than fifth ahead of James Courtney, David Reynolds, Michael Caruso, Wall and Tim Slade.
Brad Jones Racing duo Jason Bright and Fabian Coulthard narrowly missed out on the Shootout in 11th and 12th respectively.
Craig Lowndes’ difficult weekend continued, with the veteran a full 0.6s adrift of Van Gisbergen in 13th.
Scott Pye and DJR Team Penske fared even worse after the #17 Ford understeered into the tyres at Turn 1 early in the going.
After the team fixed cosmetic front-end damage, Pye recorded a time good enough for just 18th.
