Casey Stoner has undergone surgery on the right ankle that he injured during a heavy practice crash at Indianapolis earlier this month.
A statement from the Honda Racing Corporation confirming that the surgery took place described the procedure as a success.
“Today in Australia, Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner received surgery to his ankle,” read the statement.
“Doctors are pleased with how the operation went, and now must wait during this initial recuperation period to see how the ankle is healing.”
Stoner added his thoughts via social media website Twitter.
“Operation went as well as can be expected, all the staff were great also,” he wrote. “Now we just have to wait and see how I recover.”
Stoner is expected to miss the upcoming MotoGP races at Misano and Aragon, where he will be replaced by British World Superbike regular Jonathan Rea.
