The Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix has been moved to an earlier date of March 20, event organisers have confirmed.
The Albert Park race was originally scheduled for April 3 but Formula One Management has instigated a change as it plans to accommodate a 21 race calendar for next year.
The date change to March 17-20 alongside a revised 2016 F1 calendar will be ratified at the FIA World Motor Sport Council held in Paris today.
“The date for the 2016 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix has changed to 17-20 March,” read a statement on the Australian Grand Prix website.
“The change of the date is part of a number of changes on a provisional calendar issued by the World Motor Sport Council.
“The race will remain the first race of the Formula 1 season.”
As a result of the date change, the event is now scheduled to collide with V8 Supercars Symmons Plains Super Sprint.
V8 Supercars is now expected to move Symmons Plains to the April 1-3 date previously occupied by the AGP.
V8 Supercars’ non-championship appearance at Albert Park will be the touring car category’s second event of the season, following the March 3-6 Clipsal 500.
