Clipsal 500 Preview: Todd Hazelwood

Bigmate Racing’s Todd Hazelwood is set for his fourth start at his home round, as the opening round of the Supercars Dunlop Super2 Series approaches this week on the streets of Adelaide.

Hazelwood, who grew up in South Australia, is excited for what is his home event will bring, especially after completing success test laps in his new car.

“I cannot wait to take on the streets of Adelaide in the Bigmate Racing Supercar … since the end of 2016 we have been working towards this moment and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve and how our fresh machinery will compare to the rest of the super competitive field,” Hazelwood said.

“Our preparation for this season has been fantastic, we elected to have a two-day test to ensure we have sorted any small issues and understand what is required to maximise speed out of our new Triple-Eight chassis.

“I feel fitter and stronger than ever, and really focused on having another successful season.”

The 21-year-old will want to turn his previous success into a race win, after taking pole for the opening race in 2016.

“The track is super demanding and that is what I love best about street circuits, it throws everything at you and you need to be on the limit everywhere to be at the front—being my home event makes it extra special too,” Hazelwood said.

“Big thank you must go out to my team at Matt Stone Racing and my family for all their hard work leading into this weekend, my sponsors for making this all possible and supporters who always make this week extra special.”

Wes McDougall, who will engineer Hazelwood for the second season in the COTF-chassis, says running off the back from successful test days will be the key heading into this weekend.

“We are really looking forward to hitting the track at Clipsal after our two-day test at Queensland Raceway,” McDougall said.

“I think this season of Dunlop Super2 Series is going to be the most competitive ever, so with that in mind we purposely decided on doing two test days pre-season, to make sure that we can start the season strong.

“I was very impressed with what I saw from Todd’s focus and driving over the two days, and that, combined with some helpful setup changes we made, leaves me with confidence that we are ready to step up and be a threat at every race in 2017.”

Hazelwood will make his debut in the Bigmate VF Commodore this Thursday at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.
